Eternals director Chloé Zhao shares the backstory she devised for Harry Styles' Eros. Before Hawkeye went on a Christmas adventure and Spider-Man dealt with the multiverse, the MCU turned its attention to some of the oldest beings in its universe. Zhao's Eternals was released in early November and introduced audiences to the titular cosmic team. Thousands of years ago, the Eternals were sent to Earth and tasked with protecting humanity from an evil alien race known as the Deviants.
Eternals covered a lot of ground in 2 hours and 37 minutes, yet its biggest reveals were saved for the end-credits. In the first scene, musician Harry Styles made his MCU debut as Eros, Marvel's version of the god of love and Thanos' brother. Eros arrived on the Eternals' ship in the aftermath of several team members being plucked off Earth by their creator Arishem.
For me, the backstory of Eros is that he deserted, he said,"I'm not doing this anymore." So he somehow got that sphere, which you saw in his hand, and he ran off and made Pip the troll. They're like Han Solo and Chewie. Arishem's been looking for him, and he's just been a space outlaw. That's the character I had in my mind. But I never said once to Kevin,"Here's the character. Let's find an actor." For me, it was a package deal.
Should this backstory hold for Eternals 2, then Eros truly is the best person to help those like Thena and Makkari find their missing family members. Eros has been on the run from Arishem for years now, suggesting he's at least somewhat familiar with the Celestials' methods. Plus, this explains why Eros is willing to help the remaining Eternals; he isn't thrilled with the Celestials' actions either and has made his own split with them.
Of course, if Zhao doesn't return to direct Eternals 2, this could change. Right now, Marvel hasn't confirmed a sequel is in development, but it seems likely these characters will return. Eternals' ending left fans with a major cliffhanger, and that has to be resolved somehow. Plus, Styles' casting is far too big to just be utilized for one post-credits scene.
