Photo: lucy nicholson/Reuters By Rob Copeland Updated April 30, 2019 6:28 p.m. ET Longtime Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt will leave the board of the search giant’s parent, marking the end of an era for perhaps the company’s most well-known figure.
Mr. Schmidt served as the public face for the company and oversaw Google’s expansion from a stand-alone conduit for internet queries into a conglomerate stretching into mapping, email and software, as well as banner acquisitions of upstarts like video-streaming platform YouTube. The Mountain View, Calif., company is uncharacteristically on its back foot. Alphabet shares dropped 7.5% on Tuesday—their worst day in nearly seven years—after disappointing quarterly results pointed to slowing growth in its lucrative advertising business.
