Bill de Blasio sat down with POLITICO to explain why he's declining to give his personal opinion on the Eric Garner case, and it's the NYC mayor's first 1-on-1 interview since an administrative judge recommended NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo's termination
that he must respect due process, and state law dictates that Police Commissioner James O’Neill must make the final decision on discipline. The decision is due in August.
The mayor's office fears that if de Blasio were to speak out publicly, it could fuel litigation challenging any dismissal. Tamika Mallory, another activist who was at the debate, said that if the city ultimately does fire Pantaleo, de Blasio’s standing may rise. De Blasio cast the Justice Department, which delayed for years before making a decision on whether to bring charges, as the real villain in the case — and shifted blame to fellow candidate Joe Biden, who was vice president for part of that time.
