Hemi, a 2-year-old mixed breed, survived a botched surgery performed by a fake vet, officials say.Virginia Siegrist of Ephrata got a case of sticker shock when looking around for a veterinarian to neuter her 2-year-old mixed-breed dog, Hemi.
Two men came out with syringes to administer what they said was a sedative, Siegrist said, and brought him into the barn. Hemi was returned 20 minutes later, but it wasn’t till she got home that Siegrist knew something was very wrong. Hemi was bleeding profusely. The blood saturated a comforter and seeped through to the carpet of her car.
Doctors at the Pet Emergency Treatment and Specialties clinic determined the surgery site had not been cleaned or clipped, and that ligation to the cords was not performed, causing the bleeding, court documents said. “We’ve seen a number of cases in Philadelphia of an individual cropping ears or docking tails. That’s a more common procedure as fewer vets are willing to to do those cosmetic procedures,” she said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen someone offering up surgical procedures like neutering.”
