The EPA is picking up the pace on remediating the site, following a call for urgency on the matter from Harris County officials and the Texas Health and Environmental Alliance, an environmental and public health advocacy nonprofit.But first, agency officials say residents need to switch over to a public water supply as soon as possible or the EPA may not be able to move forward with clean-up efforts as fast as they want to.to provide an alternative water source in the area.
The EPA is contacting property owners who remain on private wells and asking them to sign-up to connect to the water line, the website states. The agency is working with White Oak Bend Municipal Utility District, who services the water line, to connect the residents and businesses to the public water supply.
The groundwater plume is a concentrated mass of liquid contaminants—a result of dry-cleaning chemicals dumped by Bell Dry Cleaners from 1988 to 2002. The site has been on the agency’s radar since the 2010s, and several attempts to remediate the site were, according to EPA reports.
