Despite his status as a musical icon, Elvis had his sights set on Hollywood early in his show business career.
A long time ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tony Curtis, one of the last of the old-fashioned movie stars. As his daughter, Oscar nomineeIn our conversation, we got on the subjects of fandom and movie iconography. Although Curtis was at this time in his 70s, he still spoke with boyish awe about Cary Grant, whom Curtis idolized when he was growing up poor in the Bronx.
Now, of course, Presley only ever looked like himself. But growing up in poverty in Tupelo and Memphis, the ambitious young man of the 1950s had his sights set on Hollywood early in his show business career. His choice of role model was apt. As much as Presley also admired Marlon Brando, getting to Curtis’s level seemed a more immediately attainable goal.
That Elvis never did—that he never got a chance to shine beyond matinee-idol levels, as Curtis did in—was of course largely due to the machinations of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, the confounding villain of both Presley’s life andNevertheless, it’s a fallacy to insist that Presley only ever acted in bad movies. There are more good ones than you may believe, though it helps if you keep your expectations in the realm of B pictures.
Hollywood had an unofficial pattern when it came to introducing singing idols to the big screen. Take Frank Sinatra. The 1940s slayer of movies for bobby-soxers was tested in a couple of nonmajor RKO musicals before graduating to bigger MGM pictures. The rock-and-roll musical was not yet a thing when Presley first got to Hollywood, and in any event, Presley was too big to fit comfortably into a multi-performer omnibus picture likeLove Me Tender.
