Tesla's stock has fallen and prices are down—could Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter be to blame?
half a dozen journalists because they were reporting on a topic he didn’t seem to like that much. Then he went after the left, again. Then he suspended more people for linking to other websites. He went after the left again. And then he released the Twitter Files, which showed an alleged massive cover-up against conservatives, where he attacked former employees by name, leading one to have to escape his San Francisco home in the dead of night.
Sure, you could say all of that has nothing to do with demand at Tesla, but there’s no question that the once idolizing of Musk has turned into condemnation by the people who once waited in line to buy his cars: climate-conscious liberals.
Another person who works in tech told me they canceled their Tesla Model Y order after Musk tweeted a conspiracy theory about Pelosi’s husband and then started to ban journalists. Yet another said they felt like Tesla was the best option for an electric car, but chose to buy a used model specifically not to give Musk any more money and to show that they do not support his recent actions. Though, not everyone is ready to part ways with their beloved Tesla just yet.
Musk’s antics on Twitter seemed to quickly sour Democrats’ feelings about Tesla, with a Morning Consult polla 20-point drop in net favorability from October—when the deal closed—to November. Owning the libs on Twitter may be fun for Musk, but alienating potential buyers seems to have been the result of this. Meanwhile, Republicans, despite having more favorable views of Tesla, aren’t more interested in buying electric vehicles,Morning Consult.
But there are some changes on the horizon. Since Tesla’s last earnings update, when the stock plummeted even further after it missed estimates, Musk’s tune has changed on Twitter for the first time since his bid to buy the company began.
