'For anyone who is going through similar struggles, remember that you don’t have to do it all at once.'
If I’m being completely honest, I blew through a series of medical moments in 2015 that should have prompted me to start taking my health seriously. Morbid obesity? Check. Pre-diabetic? Check. Sleep apnea? You betcha. Family history of heart issues? Yup. I dealt with all of this—plus I was 310 pounds.
With that, I took portion sizes into stronger consideration, and I learned how to make stronger, more-educated decisions about what I was eating. I consumed more fruits and veggies. I learned small habits that put the pieces of a healthy lifestyle together., and my wife, Marisa, was a big part of that. We met a little over nine years ago, and she gave me a truly unexpected gift: a true sense of inner confidence that I never knew was there before.
The early weeks of the program were chock full of 1-, 2-, and 5-minute blocks of grueling sweat. They sucked, but each time I got through them, I beamed like a child with a good report card. I went home like, “Honey, guess what I did?” During recovery, I was surprised that I missed running. That wasn’t a feeling I expected to have. But knowing that I wanted to run again after this surgery, I used the time to research and read. Whenever I returned, I wanted to do it right.
