Can elder mediation bring families back together?
Share to linkedin“My son is insisting I move in with him,” complains Sarah. “ He wants to take control of my life and take away my freedom.” “Mom I’m worried that you will fall again and break your hip or hit your head. You should move into an assisted living residence.” Susan, her older daughter adds.
It’s amazing how quickly cordial relationships between family members can deteriorate when children must deal with the care of their elderly parents. Sometimes dealing with the failing health of an elderly parent can tear a family apart and create long-lasting animosity. It is important for children to realize that they have a common bond and an obligation to each other to take care of their parents. But unfortunately when disagreements arise, suspicions begin to grow. Distrust often leads to anger and anger leads to the breakdown of communication between family members. In my experience as a financial advisor it was not uncommon to learn that some siblings had not spoken to each other in years.
In the past, most mediation was done by attorneys. A new field has developed now that allows professionals from other fields such as Geriatric Care Managers, Financial Planners and Social Workers to become mediators. In most states they must complete a 30-hour course and some observed mediations before they are certified.
