No se veía un calor como éste en febrero desde 2016, precisó Tardy, y la cuestión puede representar un peligro para quienes no están acostumbrados. El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional emitió una alerta para ciertas partes de la región, que llegarán a temperaturas de 85 a 90 grados. Ello se hizo, señaló el meteorólogo, “por la afluencia de visitantes que habrá, que no esperan 92 grados en Los Ángeles”.
La corriente en chorro, o trayectoria de la tormenta, que trae lluvias invernales desde el sur del Golfo de Alaska hasta California, ha sido bloqueada por una enorme cúpula de alta presión en el Pacífico oriental durante gran parte del invierno, y también de los últimos dos años, comentó Tardy. Está demasiado al norte y muy al este para que llueva en el sur del estado.
Los vientos de Santa Ana serán especialmente racheados el miércoles por la noche y el jueves, y se espera que se debiliten el viernes. Sin embargo, la fuerte masa de aire caliente permanecerá anclada directamente sobre California, alcanzando su máxima temperatura el viernes y el sábado. “Mientras que las entradas para el Super Bowl de SoFi están cerca de los precios récord, los meteorólogos están en busca de otro hito: la final de futbol americano más calurosa de la historia”, comentó el climatólogo Bill Patzert. “Las temperaturas podrían alcanzar los 85 grados o más en el inicio del domingo.
