Wildcats advance in girls basketball Open Division
The senior forward from El Camino just grimaced at the mention of the 18-point loss in the fourth game of the regular season way back in December.Smith and her Wildcats teammates picked a good time to rectify what happened in the first meeting.Smith’s 19 points, including five vital points down the stretch, gave El Camino a 54-47 victory over No. 4 Mount Miguel on Friday night in the Open Division playoffs at Monte Vista High, a neutral site.
“We came in and knew what we had to do,” Smith said. “Because we lost by 18 last time, I take losses really hard. Because of last time, I came out two times harder than last time.El Camino advances to Wednesday’s semifinals at No. 1 La Jolla Country Day, a 72-32 winner over No. 8 Westview, winner at 7 p.m.
With No. 5 El Camino holding a slim 49-47 lead, Smith’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to 52-47 with 1:08 to play. Her layup with 20 seconds left capped off the victory that left El Camino 21-3 overall with its 15th consecutive win. The Wildcats captured the San Diego Section Division I championship in 2021, the sixth title in girls basketball at El Camino.“We put in a lot of work and our stronger defense surprised them,” said Smith, who also had six rebounds. “Our defense the first time wasn’t very good. It was way better this time. Now we’ll go to La Jolla Country Day and play our game and see how it turns out.”El Camino had two other leads, but each time the lead went right back to Mount Miguel seconds later.
