The funding is an addition to the previously approved homelessness budget approved by the city for the current fiscal year
El Cajon will add nearly $2 million in state funding to its homelessness support system budget over the next three years to fund several programs servicing the city’s unhoused residents.
Home Start will receive $1.5 million over the next three years to fund various programs focused on rental assistance, rapid re-housing, case management and homeless outreach. The organization previously received $200,000 from the El Cajon Housing Authority each year for its outreach services.A third organization, Crisis House, will receive $40,000 in the first year to cover homeless outreach and case management.
“It’s the end of September on a fiscal year that started July 1, and we’re almost out of money,” Goble said. “That surprises me. I want to make sure that this money is going to El Cajon residents.”The additional funding to support programs for unhoused El Cajon residents comes from a Planning Grants Program passed by the California Legislature in 2017 to establish a permanent source of funding dedicated to addressing homelessness and increasing affordable housing stock throughout the state.
