Research is underway to help Ohio's wild turkey populations, while organizations also seek to improve habitats for quail and pheasants.

Ohio no longer holds an expansive population of ring-necked pheasants and bobwhite quail, a reality that’s been decades in the making and that has demonstrated stubborn resistance to fixing. Wild turkey numbers, meanwhile, currently fall short of wildlife managers’ hopes and hunters' expectations.

More recently, the Ohio State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation announced the allocation of a $50,000 grant to support research into population declines in the state. Study participants include the wildlife division and Ohio State University. The spring season in Ohio is statewide but starts and ends a week earlier in 83 counties than it does in five northeastern counties. Starting dates are built around the idea that male birds become expendable once the females nest and begin sitting on fertile eggs.

“Researchers from will download and monitor turkey location and activity data two to three times per week … to detect nesting activity, movements and mortality events,” said Mark Wiley, the wildlife division’s turkey specialist.
