“Edward Hopper’s New York,” opening Oct. 19 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, spotlights the painter’s eerie, transcendent visions of the city

Oct. 7, 2022 1:57 pm ET

‘There is a certain fear…in the things that one sees coming into a great city,” said Edward Hopper. But “Edward Hopper’s New York,” an exhibition opening on Oct. 19 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, shows that the painter had a more expansive and complex view of the city where he spent most of his life. In the show’s 200-plus works, New York is a place where the modest realities of offices and row houses inspire transcendent dreams as well as eerie visions.

Hopper was one of those dreamers. Born in 1882 in the New York City suburb of Nyack, after high school he studied art in Manhattan, then worked in advertising and illustration as he slowly developed a style. In 1913 he rented a fourth-floor walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village, with a shared bathroom down the hall. He would stay in the same building until he died in 1967, moving to a somewhat larger apartment after he got married.
