Every Fourth of July should be a time of reckoning, an occasion to contemplate where we have been and where we are going.

As our age suggests, we are a nation of survivors. We have survived wars that saved the country — the Civil War — and wars that saved the world — World War II. We have also survived wars creating so much internal strife that our own land became a battlefield — the Vietnam War. In a new USA Today/Suffolk University poll, 70 percent of Americans agree with the statement that our democracy is “imperiled” — a view informed by voter suppression efforts and the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol. The survey prompts a question: Will that attitude cast a pall on the Fourth of July this year?
