Just as you can no more separate Black history from American history, you can’t untangle June 19 from July 4.

Over decades, Juneteenth became a national holiday, not by government fiat but through a people’s feet, as emancipated Black Texans and their descendants migrated to all parts of the country, carrying Juneteenth traditions with them. You can’t fully and honestly tell the story of one without fully and honestly telling the story of the other because they both tell the American story. That Juneteenth is now a federal holiday is recognition that despite the wishes of some governors and state legislatures, we, as citizens of this nation, have a moral and civic obligation to teach, learn and understand this fuller, richer story of who we are.
