There’s no inherent contradiction between citizens having the right to own firearms and the government having the right and responsibility to enact laws regulating private gun ownership, our Editorial Board writes.

Flowers, plush toys and wooden crosses are placed at a memorial dedicated to the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. These were law-abiding citizens, too.In the wake of each mass shooting in the United States, which is an an unconscionable and growing number,Gun safety advocates decry the easy availability of guns, especially semi-automatic weapons.

This false choice — along with the notion of an unfettered right of anyone to own any weapon they desire, amassing an arsenal as big as they want — is deceitful. There aren’t any major or credible voices for gun safety arguing for abolishing private gun ownership in the United States. In fact, it’s stated clearly in the amendment that gun rights defenders argue shields them from any restrictions. If the Second Amendment began and ended with the words, “The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” the National Rifle Association’s fidelity to the spirit and word of the Constitution would be unquestionable.

The guns owned by the men in the militias were registered by the Colonial governments so they could keep track of the weapons. And, of course, guns have changed since then. It’s not like 18-year-olds are purchasing muskets.

While I do not doubt the sincerity of their sorrow, I found their responses to be predictably short on solutions. Instead, they sounded familiar themes along the lines of “gun control laws won’t work,” “we can’t infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens,” and “we must support the Second Amendment.”

DeWine should not be deferring to lawmakers on Ohio’s gun and school-safety policies: editorialIn the larger scheme of things, it’s a governor’s responsibility to lead not just public policy but also public opinion. On that front, Gov. Mike DeWine seems to have thrown in the towel – to have accepted the Statehouse status quo. That’s not leadership. And on this issue, Ohio needs the leadership only a determined governor can provide, writes the editorial board of The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com.
