The Government and NHS England set a wide range of targets for hospital providers to meet
Hospitals across the East Midlands are continuing to fall below key NHS targets as factors including the coronavirus backlog continue to have an impact. Strikes by junior doctors are also causing disruption, with British Medical Association members currently in a walk-out lasting until Tuesday as the union demands a 35% pay rise.
Given the unusual circumstances, there have been wide-ranging calls for NHS targets to be either watered down or scrapped altogether. A recent review by the former Labour health secretary Patricia Hewitt recommended that NHS targets should be slashed to a maximum of ten so that hospitals can focus on delivery.
For cancer waiting times and A&E waiting times, the data is provided at the hospital trust level. This means the data reflects all the hospitals run by a particular trust, rather than the data being broken down to individual hospitals. Hospital trusts across the country are missing this target, with research showing that almost half of England's trusts missed it in every month of 2022. House of Commons Library data showed just five NHS trusts in England met the target in every month of last year.
This could have included the average A&E wait time, time to initial clinical assessment and time to emergency treatment. But instead of scrapping the four-hour target, the Government watered it down as part of efforts to allow the NHS to recover from the pandemic.
