East Chicago Police arrested a middle school student Monday morning for having drugs and a gun on school grounds.
School Administrators, during an incident around 9:32 a.m. at Block Middle School, 2700 Cardinal Dr., became suspicious that a student had the items on them, School City of East Chicago Interim Superintendent Marlon Mitchell said in a release Tuesday. Administrators detained the student and called in the School Resource officer, who searched the student and found a loaded, light blue, sparkly Glock semi-automatic pistol and marijuana on them, Mitchell said.
Mitchell emphasized in the release that Block administrators responded immediately to the situation and encouraged parents to reach out with any questions or concerns.“Our administration remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the Block Middle School Community,” Mitchell said. “Your trust in our ability to handle such situations is paramount, and we will continue to work diligently to resolve this incident and uphold the safety of our school.
The student has been charged with felony possession of a firearm in a school and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and was transferred to the Lake County Juvenile Center, according to the East Chicago Police Department’s social media page. Because of the student’s age, the department can’t release further information.
“We feel the staff at Block Jr. High acted swiftly and appropriately, which led to the student being taken into custody without incident.” the social media post said. “We take the safety of all our students seriously and will continue to work closely with the school city of East Chicago.” Neither East Chicago Police Chief Jose Rivera nor School Board President Joel Rodriguez returned requests for comment.
