Voters are reflected in a window as they wait in line in October 2020 to participate in early voting at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Today is the start of early voting for the Nov. 7 election, when voters will decide two hot-button statewide issues dealing with abortion and recreational marijuana.
There is one notable change to voting procedures in Cuyahoga County. Elections officials are changing up parking, converting the small on-site lot at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, at 2925 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland, to handicap-only parking. Voters with valid disability placards also can enter the BOE office at the rear of the building, using the door facing the parking lot. The dropbox for absentee ballot applications and completed absentee ballots also is in this lot.
Issue 1 would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, almost certainly nullifying the state’s “heartbeat” abortion law that bans the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy — although the law is on hold due to an ongoing legal challenge. If you can’t get an ID in time, there is a workaround. You can vote by mail without an ID, again providing the last four digits of your Social Security number as proof of identity. Republicans left this exception in state law when they passed their photo ID law, citing senior citizens who vote by mail but no longer have valid driver’s licenses. You have to fill out a form to request a mail ballot, also called an absentee ballot, and return it to the board of elections office in your county.
where you can select your county. That will direct you to your local board of elections website, where you can look up the status of your ballot request or ballot. This depends on where you live. In Cuyahoga County, a number of communities have school levies and other local ballot issues, including Cleveland, which will vote on a “participatory budgeting” charter amendment. For the first, second and third weeks of early voting , early-voting hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
