Early morning fire kills young girl in Brownsville via brooklynpaper
The three-alarm blaze broke out inside a home near Howard Avenue and Pitkin Avenue just after 5:12 a.m. on Jan. 13.
Firefighters attempted to rescue the nine-year-old child, who was trapped in an attic bedroom during the fire. Paramedics began critical patient care in the street, but she and a second victim, 60, were ultimately taken to a local hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital and the second victim’s condition was unclear as of publication. Nearly 140 firefighters operated four hose-lines to knock down heavy fire on the second and third floor of the building, as well as the roof, according to FDNY Deputy Chief James Carney.Carney said that first responders arrived after getting a call about an odor of smoke — and that no fire was ever phoned in. He also commended his members for making “a tremendous push to attack the fire for the victims.
