The European Union has recommended its 27 member nations stop accepting nonessential travelers from the United States and other nations that have reported spikes in COVID-19 cases.
The New York TimesIn June, the E.U. put the United States and other nations on its “safe” list as vaccination programs began around the world. That meant people who could provide proof of vaccination could travel freely. That proved to be a boon for the summer tourist season, as U.S. tourists flooded the continent.
One of the criteria for getting on the E.U. safe list was for a nation to have no more than 75 new COVID cases per 100,000 residents over a two-week period -- a rate the U.S. has exceeded for several weeks because of the surging Delta variant., along with Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro, and the Republic of North Macedoniasaid that under current guidelines, unvaccinated travelers from countries on the “safe” list can visit the EU without quarantining if they show a negative COVID test.
