Some 480,000 British expats living abroad will not receive the State Pension uprating next April.
Nearly half a million retirees are set to miss out on the State Pension uprating next April. People living overseas in retirement only receive an increase in-line with the annual uprating through the Triple Lock policy where there is a legal requirement to do so - an example of this is where there is a reciprocal agreement between the UK and the country of residence.
However, SNP MP Drew Hendry has urged the DWP to “review the decision to continue the freeze on pensions of overseas pensioners, in particular in nations where there is no reciprocal agreement in place”. He also asked DWP what steps are being taken to establish reciprocal agreements where none exist.
“The UK State Pension is payable worldwide to those who meet the qualifying conditions and is up-rated overseas where there is a legal requirement to do so – for example where there is a reciprocal agreement that provides for up-rating. There are no plans to change this policy.
He explained: “We believe the need for reciprocal social security agreements has long passed as other countries already pay their pensioners in the UK annual increases. We believe the freezing of UK citizens’ pensions is discriminatory, unjust and immoral.”
