More than 32,500 people have signed an online petition calling for a ‘living’ State Pension
The Department for Work and Pensions has responded to calls for the State Pension to be paid to everyone in retirement at the same rate as the National Living Wage.
The DWP said there has been no policy change to the State Pension since a similar topic on increasing the weekly amount was debated by MPs in December last year. That petition received over 111,000 signatures of support. “The NLW aims to protect low-income workers and provide an incentive to work by ensuring that workers benefit from being employed. However, this is not appropriate for pensioners, most of whom have left the labour market.”
