'Managed migration' from DWP is set to be in place by October
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a warning over changes set to come into place next month.
Letters are being sent to the households affected, stating they have three months to put in a claim for Universal Credit instead, reports DerbyshireLive. The benefits being phased out are Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance , income-related Employment and Support Allowance and Working Tax Credit.
7,800 households from this had until the end of May 2023 to claim Universal Credit, with 4,930 given transactional protection. This is to keep their benefits the same as the new one would have meant they were receiving less. Government officials says some have not claimed for Universal Credit as the amount they'd get was too small and some thought they weren't eligible. Others felt a stigma attached to the benefit which was not there with tax credits.
"Extensions can be arranged for those who need more time to make a claim and support is available in local jobcentres and via a dedicated DWP helpline. Benefits are only ever stopped as a last resort after multiple unsuccessful attempts to engage with claimants."A claimant receiving one or more of the relevant legacy benefits is issued with a Migration Notice.
