The DUP’s support is key to the viability of Mr Sunak’s deal, with dozens of Conservative MPs poised to rebel against the agreement if it fails to secure the backing of the Northern Irish party., who once dubbed himself a “Brexit hardman” while a senior figure in the ERG, effusively backing the agreement.
He also praised Mr Sunak for securing a “really fantastic result” and appeared to forgive his leader for freezing him out of the negotiations with the EU, insisting there was an “extremely good reason for it”. Mr Sunak was also handed a boost by prominent Leavers who were not dyed-in-the-wool members of the ERG, who will meet on Tuesday to determine next steps.
