In L.A., Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is preparing to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy today in a show of the strength of relations between Taipei and the U.S. Meanwhile, Tsai’s predecessor is in China on his own symbolic sojourn.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, more Taiwanese say they are willing to fight if attacked by China. But without firearms or sufficient military training, many wonder how to prepare.

Former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, left, pays respects at his grandfather’s tomb in Xiangtan county, in central China’s Hunan province, on Saturday. Opinions on how best to do so are deeply divided between Tsai’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, and Ma’s historically dominant Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang, or KMT. The DPP favors a closer relationship with the U.S. over China, though critics say that could provoke Beijing’s ire and doesn’t guarantee military assistance.
