The 32-year-old man has admitted he was drunk during the horrific crash
A 32-year-old man has admitted he was drunk during a horrific crash in Kettering last year that left his friend with life-threatening injuries. Emergency services were only informed of the collision in April 2022 when the car's emergency system sent an alert to a call centre in Spain.
The court heard how Mercieri was driving his black BMW 1 Series along the A6183 towards Weekley between 12.30am and 1am on April 27 last year, when he failed to negotiate the roundabout junction with Stamford Road and sent the vehicle careering over a grass bank. The car was projected through a wooden fence and collided into a tree. The crash triggered the BMW’s in-car system to alert a call centre in Spain, who in turn called Northamptonshire Police with details of its last known location.
Both men were taken to University Hospital Coventry for immediate life-saving surgery. Mercieri appeared intoxicated and provided a blood sample for analysis, which subsequently revealed he was over the prescribed limit for alcohol with a reading of 104 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.
PC Nick Timms of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, who led the investigation, said: “This collision highlights the devastating effects drink driving can have and I am extremely disappointed that some people still choose to do it. Getting behind the wheel knowing that you are over the prescribed alcohol level to drive is dangerous and reckless.
