Daryl Akers Jr., 62, of Bridgeton was traveling north on the highway to begin his shift when his Jeep Liberty was struck by a GMC Silverado traveling south that crossed the centerline in the area of milepost 18.3 in Southampton Township and entered the northbound lanes, according to a statement from the New Jersey State Police.
Akers was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the GMC suffered serious injuries and was taken by air to a local hospital, officials said Friday night. Their condition was unclear Saturday morning. Akers graduated from the New Jersey State Police Public Safety Telecommunicator Class on Sept. 7, 2002, according to a Facebook post from the state police. He served as a coach to many new public safety telecommunicators and was also a training instructor and CPR instructor.
“He was survived by his wife, son, daughter and three grandsons, all of whom will forever be a part of our Blue and Gold family,” police said in the post. “They remain in our thoughts and prayers tonight, please keep them in yours.”
