During rescue efforts for a deceased driver discovered Friday morning off Bear Creek Road, firefighters were beset by a nest of stinging ground insects.
Boulder Creek Fire Chief Mark Bingham said the vehicle had been severely damaged in the crash and that an individual was observed trapped inside. Initially, the extent of the vehicle damage made “extrication or even evaluation of the patient in the vehicle quite difficult,” Bingham said.
“A large amount of bees came out of the ground that was right in our work area, where the vehicle was,” Bingham said. “It eventually basically chased the firefighters and myself out of that area.” Firefighters needed to hose down the area to keep the stinging bees or wasps at bay while they worked, Bingham said. In the process, two firefighters were stung repeatedly, sending one responder into anaphylactic shock, he said. Paramedics stopped the reaction with an epinephrine injection and the firefighter was “doing well” by Friday afternoon, according to Bingham.
California Highway Patrol officials were not immediately available Friday to comment on details of the fatal crash.
