Nurse Samuel Owen Strickland was convicted of being 3.5 times over the legal limit of alcohol whilst driving last year
A Lancashire mental health nurse has kept his job despite a drink driving conviction after he blew more than 3.5 times the legal limit, a Nursing and Midwifery Council Fitness to Practise Committee report concluded.
Strickland had 123 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, while the legal limit is significantly lower at 35 micrograms. The incident occurred two months earlier on January 15 after Strickland was stopped by Lancashire Constabulary in the early hours of the morning and found to be over 3.5 times the legal limit.
In the report, it states that the nurse's actions brought the profession "into disrepute" after the drink driving conviction and allegations of refusing to stop for the police. However, the report does also state that Mr Strickland showed remorse for his actions and recognises the potential danger he put himself others in.
As a result, Mr Strickland was handed a caution order for three years, meaning his name will be on the register stating that he's under the caution and anyone who enquiries will be informed of the order. This is also because it was determined that it would not be suitable to take no further action, due to the offence of "an extremely high reading and evidence of bad driving."
