The Downers Grove Public Library canceled its upcoming Drag Queen Bingo program that was slated for Oct. 11 due to threats, the library said in a news release Monday.
Downers Grove Public Library canceled a drag-queen bingo event slated for Oct. 11 after being hit with aggressive emails and threats from conservative-leaning community members.
“Diverse programs, such as Drag Queen Bingo, help everyone see people who are different being accepted and celebrated. We understand that this program might not be for everyone — just as all programs, books, services, and other materials from the library will have different audiences,” the library said.
“Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, there is a large LGBTQIA community here in Downers — if you don’t acknowledge it, it doesn’t mean it’s not here,” March said. “It’s a lot of noise from the right as a way to try and continue to make themselves relevant in a world where they are no longer relevant.”
