Akwesasne territory straddles two Nations — Canada and the U.S. — as well as two tribal administrations.

The original Mohawk territory comprised most of Upstate New York along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. The northern boundary was the Saint Lawrence River. To the north was Algonquin territory.

The Mohawk fought back and eventually migrated eastward or fled to Canada. George Washington may be a hero to the Americans, but to the Mohawk he was a genocidal killer. With the start of the War of 1812, more refugees from the United States, including the Cayuga, Seneca and Onondaga joined and Akwesasne became a sanctuary for people seeking peace.

The border lopped off St. Regis Mission on the south side of the river and made it part of Quebec. Cornwall Island would become part of Ontario and the rest was part of New York state.
