DoorDash is changing its pay policy after public outcry, and will now treat tips like tips by bizcarson
on a reporter's day spent delivering for DoorDash and other delivery companies.
The controversy stemmed from DoorDash's pay model, which adjusted the amount DoorDash paid out to a delivery driver based on how much a customer tipped. The company would contributed a base of $1 per order and then count a customer’s tip, if he or she left one, towards the guaranteed pay minimum per job. If the tip fell short of the guaranteed pay, then DoorDash would make up the difference, but if the tip exceeded it, then DoorDash's contribution would be as low as $1.
The problem was: most customers view tips as a bonus on top of a wage, not a subsidy to help the company pay less. Now, DoorDash claims it will be adjusting driver earnings to correspond with the exact size of the tip, Xu said.that it planned to stick with its pay model following months of driver surveys and research groups.
