“If a family member of one of the jockeys recently passed away, I want to know,” she said. “Not so that I can ask about it, but so that if they bring it up, I know what they’re talking about.” “There was no indication of a claim of foul, there was no inquiry, and from the pan shot, it was hard to tell that anything happened,” she said. “Our [NBC] guys missed it, and so did the stewards.”
“Fortunately, my producer Amy Zimmerman saw that Johnny had gotten up,” Brothers said, “so I was able to continue to my position. If he had stayed down, I might have had to go back to check on him.” At that point many of the riders were unaware of the loose horse, and the danger of an already-risky situation heightened when Bodexpress reversed direction.
