Special counsel Jack Smith is calling on the federal judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's 2020 election subversion case to urgently install a gag order, flagging several social media incidents that he believes warrant restrictions on the former president.
Smith said in a court filing on Friday to U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan that Trump should not be permitted to"obtain the benefits of his incendiary public states" and then"avoid accountability" through"feign retraction." He was referring to Trump's appearance at a gun store in South Carolina on Monday, during which he was videotaped holding a custom Glock.
"The defendant either purchased a gun in violation of the law and his conditions of release, or seeks to benefit from his supporters' mistaken belief that he did so," Smith wrote.
