“The reference I made to a woman’s ‘prime’ this morning was inartful and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I regret it,” Don Lemon tweeted.
By Thursday afternoon and amid widespread backlash , Lemon issued a public apology.
Co-host Poppy Harlow quickly interjected, wondering what her colleague was talking about. Undeterred, Lemon said he was merely relaying the facts, which you could find “if you google when is a woman in her prime.” “Are you talking about prime for, like, childbearing? Or are you talking about prime for being president?” Harlow retorted.
“My mom is 80 years old. I just gave her a surprise birthday party,” he said. “Is she as physically strong as she once was? No. But mentally, she is sharp. Could she run the country? If she wanted to, I guess she could. But I guess it depends on the individual.”
