Everton analysis after the Premier League clash with Brentford
One big arrival last month threatened to usurp Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s position as Everton’s number one striker but it was another new addition – his own little bundle of joy – that was on the centre-forward’s mind as he celebrated the Blues’ third goal that sealed their victory at Brentford.
Since then there have been more injury setbacks, new manager Sean Dyche vowing to leave no stone unturned when it came to getting to the bottom of his fitness, a “factory reset” over the summer, his collision with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on his return and then of course the £25.8million signing of Beto from Udinese.
Sean Dyche’s decision to replace Arnaut Danjuma – who had scored in the Blues’ last two away games – out wide with Garner, who told the ECHO after the 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa last month that central midfield remains his favourite position was a bold call. What on face value could have been viewed as a negative move after the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal last time out when Everton failed to lay a glove on Mikel Arteta’s side, proved to be an inspired masterstroke from an under-fire Blues boss.
Not only was this just their third success on the road in the competition of the past 12 months but it was a first-ever top flight win at Brentford with visits going back to 1936, the year of three English kings. Since the Bees returned to English football’s elite division for the first time since 1947, a trio of different Blues bosses have come to the ground now called the Gtech Community Stadium.
