The dog and his owner were hiking on a trail along the cliffs of the Mendocino Headlands when the dog jumped 50 feet into the water, according to Assistant Chief John Pisias of the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department. The dog then swam to a rock at the bottom of the cliff and stayed there for close to an hour before Pisias and a team of nine volunteer firefighters and three Cal Fire firefighters launched a rescue boat to retrieve him.
"One of the swimmers in the boat climbed on the rock with this dog and this dog just curled up in her lap and was very quiet, very calm and very good," Pisias said. Videos that were taken by an onlooker went viral on TikTok yesterday and show footage of the incident, from the dog sitting stranded on the rock to firefighters loading him into the boat and taking him to safety.
