Four years into a five-year pact, does 'Dahmer' justify Netflix’s monster deal with Ryan Murphy?
, Ryan Murphy has finally scored his first bona fide hit for the streaming service.
That’s not to say Murphy hasn’t been productive in that time. To date, his Netflix deal has yielded three limited series — “Hollywood,” “Halston” and “Monster” — with a fourth, “The Watcher,” slated for release later this month, along with the 2020 musical film “The Prom.” The reason for that begins to reveal itself when you dig into the viewership data available. Both seasons of “The Politician” predated Netflix’s weekly viewership reports as well as Nielsen’s streaming ratings, but numbersby 7Park Data indicate that the second season never reached more than 2.3 percent of Netflix viewers in 7Park’s panel in any given month.
So, has Netflix’s investment in Murphy paid off? Admittedly, viewership is not the only metric that measures success on streaming, or on television; critical and cultural cachet must also be considered. But Murphy’s Netflix output has not matched the level of critical acclaim or awards pedigree of Fox projects like “American Crime Story” and “Pose,” either.
