The former Red Sox slugger figures to be primarily a DH for the Dodgers, leaving the chances of Justin Turner returning to the team in question
LOS ANGELES — Justin Turner’s path back to the Dodgers just got a little more narrow.
The 35-year-old Martinez started 139 games at designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox last season and has not played the field since 2021. In the past four seasons, he has made a total of only 78 starts in the outfield. The addition of the right-handed Martinez and the Dodgers’ determination to push prospect Miguel Vargas into an everyday role next season would seem to leave limited playing time for Turner, whose $16 million club option was declined by the Dodgers earlier in the offseason. The Dodgers have expressed a desire to re-sign Turner at a lower salary. But as a free agent, Turner has drawn interest from the Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers.
