GLENDALE, Ariz. — J.D. Martinez is among friends.
Martinez signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox in 2018 and became teammates with Mookie Betts for the next two years, long enough for another friendship to blossom. In the second half, though, his numbers dipped – a .233 average and .701 OPS. He finished with his lowest average, slugging percentage, OPS and home run total for a full season since 2013. It’s part of a three-year slide that left Martinez available to the mindfully-shopping Dodgers this winter.
The natural inclination is to look at another number for the explanation – Martinez will turn 36 in August. The Dodgers trust that is the case and not just further evidence that time is eroding Martinez’s skill set, robbing him of bat speed. To explain any decline, Martinez points back to the 2018 World Series against the Dodgers when he rolled his ankle on second base. He re-injured it at the end of the 2021 season, causing him to miss Boston’s wild-card game against the Yankees. Protecting that ankle created “a domino effect” of bad habits in his swing, Martinez said.
