Dodge brings host of new Hellephant and Hurricane crate engines to SEMA.
The original 1000-horsepower supercharged Hellephant V-8 is now one of four Hellephant variants, with Dodge adding versions with cast iron blocks and E85 capability right out of the box. The cast-iron Hellephants have been given a host of upgrades to improve power, including new internals, bigger throttle bodies, an improved supercharger, and more.
The Hurricane straight-six crate engines, which Dodge calls the HurriCrates, are both derived from the company's newly revealed 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine. There are two versions: Cat 1 and Cat 3. The Cat 1 makes 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque, while the Cat 3 delivers 550 hp and 531 lb-ft thanks to upgrades like better turbos, a higher compression ratio, dual high-pressure fuel injectors, and forged pistons.
These numbers are all just estimates for now, says Dodge. Finalized specs, as well as pricing and availability dates, will be announced in 2023. Road & Track staff writer with a taste for high-mileage, rusted-out projects and amateur endurance racing.
