Dozens of docks built in 1980s need work; city recently rebuilt the largest one, the J dock, at a cost of more than $3 million
Oceanside is renewing its efforts to repair, replace or rebuild many of the docks in its harbor marina, some of which still have gangways, pilings and other original parts from their construction in the 1960s.
“Things don’t look good, but we can fix them,” Bahadori said. “Like anything, the longer we wait, the more expensive it becomes.” Revenue typically just covers expenses in the harbor budget with little surplus to set aside for large projects, Bahadori said. Fee increases must be approved by the City Council, acting in its dual role as the Harbor District board, and boaters have opposed them in years past. The city’s policy is for any proposal to be first reviewed by the harbor advisory committee.
“I don’t think most people would complain about an extra dollar per foot a month,” Yaglinski said, which he estimated would increase the harbor district’s revenue by a “couple hundred thousand” dollars a month. The report basically spells out “a program for the future to keep things the way they are,” Yaglinski said. “It’s good that we’re on top of it. We don’t want anything to collapse on anybody.”
