Pat Fitzgerald was the face, voice and symbol of Northwestern athletics. For Northwestern fans, he was the embodiment of the program. Now, fixing Northwestern’s culture is paramount as ScottDochterman explains ⤵️
. Initially, Fitzgerald received an unpaid two-week suspension, but after “The Daily Northwestern” reported the whistleblower’s heinous allegations, Northwestern President Michael Schill said he “may have erred in weighing the appropriate sanction for Coach Fitzgerald.” Those allegations since were corroborated by 11 eyewitnesses, and Schill fired the greatest figure in Northwestern athletics history.Football rightly comes second in a decision like this.
Equaling that feat in importance was what Fitzgerald did in 2006. As a 31-year-old assistant, Fitzgerald stepped in as head coach when Randy Walker shockingly died of a heart attack only weeks before training camp. Fitzgerald moved the program upward immediately with a 6-6 record in 2007 and a nine-win campaign in 2008. The Wildcats were bowl eligible for six consecutive seasons, and they won their first-ever bowl game in 2012 to finish 10-3.
Three times Fitz’s Wildcats won at least 10 games. Twice, they took the Big Ten West Division title. In 2020, he was named the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year, and he signed a 10-year extension in 2021.Under normal circumstances, a school will have difficulty replacing the best, most charismatic coach in its history without him casting a shadow so large it usually consumes the immediate successor.
