When she wasn’t curating the film’s hyperspecific onscreen aesthetic, Robinson spent her time capturing the behind-the-scenes vibes for posterity. “I love Polaroids, and I’ve always been drawn to that type of photography,” she said during a recent Zoom. “I started this knowing that I wanted to document the making of the film and have my own little time capsule of it. Polaroids just felt like a really fun version of that. Ultimately, I want to make a coffee-table book of all of them.
In celebration of her sophomore directorial feature , Robinson shared her exclusive behind-the-scenes photo diary withMaya’s costume in this scene is one of my favorites. We didn’t really need any more costumes, but we couldn’t let this one go, so I wrote in a story point about why Eleanor would have done a costume change, just so we could use this incredible striped number.Another set I absolutely loved—Hillary and her team created this incredible cloud room.
Maya and I had many sessions with the script where we talked about Eleanor, about the twists and turns of where she is emotionally at any point. In her performance, Maya actually played the character three different ways. There are three different sides of Eleanor. And we would have her do the three different versions of the character in every scene, so in the edit we could build that nuanced performance.
