Bryan AlexanderANAHEIM — It's official. Walt Disney Studios is bringing back"Star Wars" legendary Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor donning the robes for a Disney+ streaming scripted series.
McGregor made at surprise appearance at the end of Friday's panel at the D23 Expo to make the announcement with Kathleen Kennedy, the president of LucasFilms. "After secrets and fibs and not being to talk about it, I'm thrilled to bring out a beloved member of the Star Wars family," said Kennedy, introducing McGregor, who appeared to wild applause from the fans."Can you please ask me if I’m going to play Obi-Wan again?" asked McGregor."Yes," came his simple reply, sending the audience into more roars.Ewan McGregor starred as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.
Alec Guinness played the older character in 1977's"Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" where he was killed in a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader. He still appeared in"The Empire Strikes Back" and"The Return of the Jedi." No further details about the new series were given. But Kennedy said"the scripts are written, and we begin shooting next year. We can't wait to start production. And we have our Obi-Wan."Kennedy announced that the animated"Clone Wars" series would return, coming to the streaming service February 2020.
