Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has admitted that Disney taking the reins on Deadpool3 after its acquisition of Fox makes him a little a worried. 'Let me look right into the camera. Am I nervous? YES!'
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld is nervous about Disney making Deadpool 3. The first two Deadpool films, which came out in 2016 and 2018 respectively, harnessed the R-rated, irreverent, fourth-wall-breaking energy of the original Deadpool comics. The movies both proved to be huge successes, with the first Deadpool making its budget back 10 times over.
The first two Deadpool films were both produced by 20th Century Fox, who owned the rights to Marvel's X-Men and Deadpool characters. Fox was unique in the modern comic book blockbuster world by giving certain properties the chance to flourish within an R-rating, beginning with the X-Men spinoff Logan in 2017, which was also a huge success. However, now that Disney has acquired the studio, the fate of Fox's superhero projects is still up in the air.
Liefeld has proven himself to be a fan of both Marvel comics and the MCU, but the tone his characters operate under are certainly not the perfect fit for Disney/Marvel's current slate of projects. While some of Marvel's Disney+ streaming series have been trending more adult, like the paramilitary mayhem of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the great bulk of their theatrical films remain firmly ensconced in PG-13 territory.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige has previously announced that Deadpool 3, which is due to begin filming this year, will indeed be taking place in the MCU. However, perhaps the best move would be for Marvel to keep the"merc with a mouth" in his own continuity, to allow the tone of Liefeld's original source material to be preserved.
