Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that there will be a slowdown in Star Wars projects. This comes as Disney takes financial hits in several categories. Going forward, the company's plan will be to make less content at a lower budget. 🎬
Star Wars is headed for another slow-down, as Disney's CEO confirmed the company will cut back on content. For the last four years, the home of Star Wars has been Disney+, which has seen the release of five live-action seasons of TV and numerous animated projects. There are several more series slated for release, with Ahsoka landing in August, but streaming plans beyond 2024 are murky.
In an interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that there will be a slowdown in Star Wars projects. This comes as Disney takes financial hits in several categories, with Disney+ costs running high and numerous theatrical releases disappointing at the box office, including Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Going forward, the company's plan will be to make less content at a lower budget.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Does Star Wars Need Less Content… Or More? While there's been an oversaturation of content on the Marvel Studios front, it can be argued that Disney and Lucasfilm aren't producing enough Star Wars. Until 2022, there was only one live-action release a year on Disney+, and both Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi have been nominated for Emmys.
On the other hand, there's something to be said about maintaining the magic of Star Wars. New releases don't bring the same adrenaline rushes that Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi did. The quality of the sequel trilogy films may play a hand in that, but the infrequency of the releases made Star Wars more of an event than it is now.
