A New York judge has dismissed state fraud charges against Paul Manafort.

'Humiliated and ashamed': Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chairman, sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison

Manafort, the first Trump aide to challenge criminal charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller who investigated Russia's interference in the 2016 election, was convicted at trial last year in Virginia on eight counts of financial fraud related, in part, to his submission of false statements in support of residential mortgage loans for several properties in New York.

He later pleaded guilty to related conspiracy and obstruction charges in a Washington, D.C., federal court. The convictions marked a dramatic downfall for Manafort, who helped guide Trump to the presidency in 2016.Rick Gates was sentencedGates, who was initially charged with Manafort in 2017 as part of Mueller's Russia investigation, pleaded guilty last year and went on to serve as a key prosecution witness against his former partner.

Manafort and Gates were initially charged with failing to register as foreign agents for Ukraine and making false statements to the FBI to conceal that work. The pair was later charged in Virginia for a years-long scheme to hide millions of dollars of income earned from their work for foreign governments.
